Hey guys i drew a region G tag and i have not hunted up there before, jusy have had a couple buddies hunt up there. Im looking to hunt in the sub unit in G 145 or 144. Does anybody have any general areas up there or any ideas of where i can scout a couple times in August before i hunt. Im looking to hike in 2-7 miles in and hopefully not be hunting around to many people. Any information would help.

hopefully not be hunting around to many people. Thats funny, region G is the hardest hit backcountry area in the west. Nothing you will do will get you away from the crowds you will see more people than deer. Sure you will see some bucks when you go scouting but come opener there will be 3 camps in the very basin you scouted in the summer. I live in G and H and i can get tags over the counter and i dont even hunt it to many people for me.

Yeah its bad and I am not making it up you will see dont worry. I hunted G for around 10 years and then Mike Eastman and his brothers and then the poacher Mike brownlee decided to use that deer herd to make there bank accounts bigger and that area was ruined almost over night. I moved north Into the wilderness of H and it was nice for a couple years but soon a ton of people moved into there and I quit hunting the western side of the state all together. I am sure your freinds have taken some nice buck in the past in that area I have to but its went extremely down hill even in the last few years. I wish we had a deer heard now like we did even 4 years ago but we dont and it gets worse every year. Do the herd a favore though please dont shoot a nice 160 inch 4 point thats only 3 years old just so you dont go home empty handed. Thats part of the reason the genetics have been ruined In G and H.

I would have to agree with UTHTR it gets pounded hard. You wont get away from the crowds. I live there and it gets worse every year.

170 inch deer at 4 years old has the genetics to be 190 when it primes out at 6 or 7 years. Let them go let them grow. Thats the problem that herd faces good genetics but the deer cant live long enough to reach there full potental. There are plenty of deer that have lesser genetics in that area that arent getting shot because they dont make the 170 or 180 mark and many of them are older age class bucks with big wide racks they just wont score good. And those bucks are the ones that are doing the breeding cause thay are the only ones that live to be mature. The bucks with good genes are getting killed when they are 170 and 180 and still young.

I AGREE. Its been way over published and overhunted, let the small ones grow. If ya got to shoot one just to fill your tag then take a three point gene outa the herd.

region g used to hold lots of good bucks, almost a decade ago.. im with uthtr on this one. its just too bad that mismanagment has led to this. to even get that herd half way rebounded the g&f wld have to cut 75 percent of the tags for a number of years. i heard that they have to much money tied up in that herd to ever cut back tags. it makes you think the game and fish is run by accountants not logical sound management practices. Ontopof that the seasons have been longer than ever, meaning more and more bucks are being taken... i have given up on that area at the start of its decline and have never been happier. im just scared the new unit i have found is headed in the same direction. I looked over the region g and h winter range for many years. last year i didnt even see a buck i would shoot period. A far cry from its hayday. if the g&f wont do thier part it is up to us as avid mule deer fanatics to make sure the herds are healthy. it makes me sad those regions have come to this but no good thing last for ever, especially not hunting in the information age..
