Don't touch or disturb anything, take pics, GPS the location if possible. Contact DWR, they'll send an officer out to check it. If it's deemed not a poach, they MAY let you keep it.

what will they decide if the scavengers have eaten pretty much the whole body?

They wont have anything to decide if you just take the head and dont tell nobody about it.

agree with buglebutt. I don't have any dead heads in my posession. I don't want the chance of getting cited for it, doesn't take much for the dwr to slap you with a fine. I avoid the hint of anything that will lead something to a potential ticket.

I don't care if it's a 300" muley, with my shitty luck I'd get caught and it ain't worth the hassle or risk just for a chunk of bone.

not worth getting in trouble, i know the chance that they might not let you take it sucks but i for one hate poaching and this rule helps deter poachers. I for one would definetly not TOUCH a dead head over 24 inches wide as that is considered a trophy animal and they can nail your ass to the wall.

I watched a small 5 point bull come into a waterhole I sat on every day for 7 days of the archery hunt. it was sickly and you could tell it was nearing death from whatever it was that was wrong with it. a week later I started to smell it rotten. sure enough, I found it. I figured it would be a good test for calling a DWR officer about it since I had heard stories of them being taken. He met me and we went up there. I showed him the bull. Upon showing him the bull, he walked straight up to it grabbed the antlers looked them over, did not look at the body at all, turned to me and said, yup this was deffinately a poach. I asked what would happen with the antlers? He told me they would go to an auction in which I looked up the time and place for, so I could go there to try and "buy" my find back since it was deemed a poached animal. the head was never seen at the auction.... a few years later I came across some pictures of a "certain" fish and game officers basement from a friend of his. Not only was his basement loaded with many trophy "dead heads" but among them was this 5 point bull with the distinct curly sword tine and unusually long third on the right side, identical to the pictures of the kill I had found. also was housed a very nice 30 inch buck with a very unique four splitting crown in its right G3 and a dropper on the left side which was identical to a buck a friend of mine found off a lion kill, which was also deemed a poached animal. So you do the math. In my opinion, In certain areas The fish and game are corrupt, so I suggest you either get "buddy buddy" with one of them that would let you keep it, or avoid them like a bad disease. I have had my fair share of run-ins from the fish and game in which i have been accused of stuff that was merely an assumption of some random person. such as a time myself and six friends all shot deer within 3 days during the rifle hunt. We skinned, hung, and processed them in the front yard of one house, in which I was relentlessly tormented by fish and game for days, being drug out of class multiple times playing the "we know what you did so come clean" crap, them walking into my house uninvited to "investigate" with no warrant, them attempting to confiscate multiple deer heads my dad shot many years ago due to "no proof of license connected to the deer" (pictures wouldn't suffice). When it comes to fish and game, they have left a bad taste in my mouth, I despise them. don't ask dont tell. and if you do find a natural dead head make sure it was found in a state allowing you to collect them if you are following me. do your own research and if its obvious that it was poached, or you merely don't really care. Do the right thing and report it! i dislike poachers just as much as the next honest hunter and will do anything in my power to bring them down. any time you do collect a dead head from a state with laws against it you do run the risk of getting in trouble. so honestly its all up to you.

its pretty much the same deal as you trophymuley, i watched this buck since november. he hurt his shoulder early on, so he got skinny, and he just couldn't make the winter. the night before he died, i watched him get out of his bed, (he was always laying down due to his lack of energy), and go up into a grove of trees. i came back two days later, and we found him up in the same spot i'd last seen him. dead. i guess he'll stay up there...

i had a buddy hit a nice 175 class buck in his truck. the fish and game said they'd come pick it up, never did, so they called again to tell them they were taking to a taxidermy shop, they showed up, took the horns and never heard about is since!! with about the $1200.00 worth of damage to the truck i told him to keep the head, at least get something for the money spent to fix it! i agree, don't ask don't tell!

I got real lucky....the DWR let me keep this dude. The fish cop was pretty sweet. Scored 195 2/8. The backs are unreal. 21, 22 inch G's with 13 inch G'3. Fronts are pretty week. 27" wide.

agree with bonedady, tarp and dark. fish holers won't come out unless they can get some photo ops handed to them from the public. i've called several times and it's always then same. get plates and description and we'll be there....... went to check a cat and the bunghole's hands were softer than my wifes, he almost gagged takin the tooth out. get a plack on the wall sayin you been to college and you got a job at the DFG. not one of them pussies could even hike into where i'd find a winter/lion kill. I have found many the risk sucks but DOW finds takes all of the bone and puts them in there house and front yard i know DOW cop and thats what happens i called one in and drove by his house and there it was in his front yard. If you find one and call it in who would think you poched it. I think if you call you can have the bone the law needs to be changed.

you guys that got screwed you need to call in and report the fish and game officers who have the horns in their house they can get in worse trouble than us for pulling crap like that......think when you find a dead head take pictures videos, tell and maybe show someone else then show the fish and game, so its just not his word against yours that way if he takes it for himself you can get him in big trouble because ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL ALL HORNS THEY COLLECT HAVE TO GO TO THE AUCTION. If you see a sick animal take pictures or videos etc before it dies that way when he says yeah definantly a poach show him the video of the damn thing being sick for a couple weeks helps persuade that it was a poach. Id imagine if you turn it in fast they will be more likely to give it to you as it will be more obivous rather than if it is rotten/eaten its harder for the officer to tell whether it was poached or not- might help convince him that you didnt shoot the deer let it rot and then come and tell him 6 months later you found a deadhead. make sense? Anyways it does suck that you cant pick up dead heads in utah like you can in arizona. What about if you find a dead head in arizona, wonder if it is legal to bring it into utah?

what about bringin deadheads into utah found in arizona? wonder if you can call the dwr or somethin guess id call a fish and game from arizona, i'm not chancing getting in trouble! it may be legal in arizona but i wouldnt want to have a big old dead head that i found in arizona and then have the utah dwr come after me. p.s. in my previous post i meant if the animal was sick for a few weeks take pictures and videos of it like that so it will help prove that it died from something else besides poaching not that it was a poach like i accidentally said

all the dead heads i have found were found in "arizona" with documentary photos. their is no evidence of them found in utah. if its small, chances are fish and game will let you keep it. if you find something worth keeping, go on a little road trip to arizona if you follow me. i agree with you k jar. the more documentation you can get the better. weed out the bad fish and game officers. get them fired. after all is said and done fish and game officers who steal dead heads for their own gain are considered "justified poachers of the honest" in my mind, to them its keep it hush hush hide it in my basement and were all good. if they do get caught then they merely pull the innocent card of "this is where i was storing them to take to the auction". they can seriously get out of anything they want. they are corrupt

i live in wyoming and a few winters ago i was watching alot of elk i had found one that looked really sick his hip bones was showing he was a nice 6 point in all reality i was hoping he would just pull thru so i watched all these elk we had a nasty storm that lasted a few days white out cond i went out when it cleared and out there about 500 yards all i could see of him was the third point up to the sixth sticking out of the snow but just one side i thought damn it he didnt make the storm so i called the local game warden i asked him whats a guy to do when he has been watching a elk slowly die and what to do when he does die he told me to call him if and when it does so i did i had showed him the pics of it when he meet me where the elk was laying so we walked all the way out there in hip deep snow he had his metal dector so when we got to the elk i had noticed it wasnt the same elk i had been watching it was a diffrent one i told him i know i found this one but this aint the same elk i have been watching for awhile so we tried to pull the elk out of the snow but it was froze down couldnt move it so he told me we would just cut the head off and he would come back out at a later date to investigate why it died i told him if it was shot i didnt do it so we cut the head off he told me if i wanted the head i would have to drag it back to the truck so he took off didnt give me any help he walked all the way back to the truck as i am dragging it thru the hip deep snow with the head and some of the neck still there and he waited for like half hour at his truck for me to bring that head and when i got there we put it in his truck took my number said he would call if it checked out ok a few months went by no word so me and a buddy went out there shed hunting and just over the hill where we had found the one dead one the warden took the one i was watching died 500 yards from the other one but it was over the hill so whats a guy to do when he finds one and the waredn takes it does he call him back to take another one??? nope well six months went by i was out bow hunting and ran into the same warden i asked what had turned out with that head he told me he had been waiting for my call the elk had checked out fine it was just a winter kill i could come get it anytime and that he had found another one over the hill from that one that had its head chopped off i told him huh so i did get it back i think if it would have been a huge bubk or bull i would'nt have got it back i had to pay 8 bubks and its on my wall i know in wyoming if it wasnt poached and u leave it there they will let u have it after they check it out

I chased lions off of both these bulls and turned them in and in the end i got them back but it took about a month... i had to write a letter to the dwr and take the officer into them even though i took pics of the lion tracks and where i skinned it back on the neck to show the puncture wounds... so i ended up gettin em in the end but it was quite a bit of trouble ---------- *Huntin 4 Life*
